Job Description

Our users rely on MyFitnessPal to power their health and fitness journeys every day. As a member of our Data Science team, you’ll have the opportunity to positively impact those users by harnessing MyFitnessPal’s data and scale to identify insights that will motivate and inspire our users along their health journey. Essential Duties:

The Senior Data Scientist (Nutrition Insights) is responsible for driving the analysis and modeling of our millions of users and billions of food logs. MyFitnessPal has the largest food database and food diary catalog in the world, and this role will model and analyze this data to learn how to best help our users succeed in their health journeys and test how to best communicate this insight and guidance with our user base in the app.

You will be responsible for technical analysis/design and rapid delivery of insights that can be implemented as A/B tests in our app and user engagement platform. To thrive in this role, you are a passionate self-starter that will execute well in an agile environment where we’ll depend on you to make pragmatic decisions, establish and use tight feedback loops with your Data Science and marketing teams, and take calculated risks based on your knowledge from collaborating with your peers.

This is an individual contributor role that will work closely with the Data Science, Marketing, and Product teams.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Diving into MyFitnessPal’s vast datasets with the intention of harnessing our scale to identify patterns of success for users in their health journeys
  • Create cohorts and user segments via clustering and other statistical methods
  • Build ML models that drive a personalized experience throughout the MyFitnessPal user journey
  • Evaluate and improve existing systems to provide more robust solutions that allow others to move quickly and efficiently (our data can be messy, leave it better than you found it!)
  • Partner with product engineering and data engineering to ensure the team adopts best practices for code development, DataOps/MLOps, testing, data quality, and quality assurance.
  • Support resolution of production issues with ML model-driven production features.
  • Work with our engineering, data science, product and leadership teams in support of MyFitnessPal to solve critical user problems. This is a broad surface area and uses a variety of technologies.

You should apply for this role if you:

  • 6+ years of machine learning experience in a production setting, with extensive experience in NLP, personalization/ranking, and/or deep learning.
  • Deep knowledge of AI architectures, ML algorithms, applied statistics, and generative AI and LLMs.
  • Demonstrated AI/ML product development from inception to deployment and maintenance.
  • Confidence and passion to quickly make an impact via rapid prototyping and in-app A/B testing .
  • Ability to partner with different functions to ensure that your solutions drive real business impact, especially lifecycle marketing.
  • A high degree of technical understanding to be able to closely collaborate with engineers and ML practitioners and being additive in strategic discussions about MFP’s future product offering.
  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to present technical content to non-technical audiences.
  • Strategic thinking and ability to incorporate larger business context into algorithm and product development.
  • Can quickly assess complex problems and facilitate group discussions to identify solutions and generate appropriate milestones and tasks.
  • Have a solid understanding of what it takes to build production ML-models used in consumer applications.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL.
  • Have a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field (or otherwise equivalent and extensive real-world experience).
