As the Senior Principal, Tax Policy, your primary responsibility will be for overseeing tax policy for Airbnb in North America and Canada (NAMER). You will actively develop, oversee and execute new tax frameworks and strategies that encourage innovation in the short term rental industry. You will focus on tax policy issues such as Short Term Rental and marketplace facilitator laws, State & Local Taxes, Digital Taxes, and other tax laws that impact the company’s and hosts’ operations in the region. You will understand and work closely with the teams in Tax, Legal, Public Policy & Communications and the Programs and the Business Operations teams. The successful candidate will ensure that all of these tax policy needs are understood and are aligned.

This position will be based in the US and will have prime responsibility for the NAMER region, with a secondary focus on supporting Airbnb’s global tax policy efforts.

A Typical Day:

  • Monitor and report on state and local tax legislation, tax policy and tax regulatory environment
  • Help formulate and implement Airbnb’s engagement strategy with government and governmental organizations on issues related to tax in NAMER
  • Coordinate with Airbnb’s global tax policy priorities and align with internal stakeholders and outside advisors
  • Support Airbnb’s 21st Century, Campaigns, Communications and Tax Policy efforts globally in coordination and collaboration with the broader Airbnb Public Policy, 21st Century and Communications teams
  • Work with internal stakeholders to assess and determine constructive external engagement based on Airbnb tax priorities
  • Identify business implications of tax legislative and regulatory proposals, and draft memos for internal and external purposes
  • Work with industry organizations and trade associations
  • Engage with senior tax and tax policy officials to advocate on behalf of Airbnb on issues with significant financial and strategic impact
  • Present Airbnb’s position on technical tax, tax legislative and tax policy matters before state and local government and governmental organizations
  • Draft position papers, memos, guidelines and talking points on tax policy matters

Your Expertise:

  • 12+ years of relevant experience in law firm or Big 4, and fast-paced, multinational high-technology companies or government organizations
  • Strong foundation of direct and indirect tax technical knowledge
  • Knowledge of US and Canadian frameworks and institutions related to direct and indirect taxation.
  • Understanding of US state and local government policy and decision making processes
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work
  • Strong relationships with advisors, government officials and external stakeholders
  • Proven ability to think strategically while also engaging in day-to-day tactical details
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven ability to interact effectively with all level of staff, with cross-functional teams, upper management, and with government contacts
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to interact with all levels of management while at the same time able to work independently
  • Advanced degree preferred: Law degree, Masters or graduate degree in Tax, Accounting, Public Policy

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
